Some places run on a different clock. Nosara, on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, runs on the tide chart and not much else. The town organizes itself around first light at Playa Guiones, and everything after that is negotiable.

Mornings

The surf is the alarm. Guiones is one of the most consistent beach breaks anywhere, gentle enough to learn on and long enough to keep you honest for years. Paddle out at dawn, before the offshore wind gives up, and the day is already a success by seven.

Afternoons

Inland, the jungle takes over fast: howler monkeys in the canopy, big leaves, rain you can hear coming a full minute away. Our Nosara cabin sits in that green, under a canopy roof that keeps the air moving. The Nicoya is one of the world's Blue Zones, and after a week you begin to understand why.

Getting there

Fly into Liberia, the small international airport at the top of the peninsula. From there it is about two and a half hours by car, paved most of the way, with a final gravel stretch that does more to slow your pulse than any meditation app.

Rent something with clearance in the green season and let the drive be part of the trip. By the time the road turns to dust and the ocean shows through the trees, you are already on Nosara time.

It is a long way from the Colorado high country, which is the point. Same idea, different latitude: a simple place to stay, in a landscape that does the rest.
